HI, WE’RE PRIXM!

(it’s pronounced like “prism”, let’s not get too crazy)

OUR

STORY

PriXm is an all queer media arts collective and dance team based in Toronto, co-founded by queer Asian creatives Michelle “Ky” Hanitijo and Lorenzo “NJoe” Queano. Since 2016, this duo has worked together on many creative commercial and passion projects. They founded PriXm in 2022 to grow their team and evolve their creative practices in a collaborative and community based approach. The “X” in PriXm represents the X-factor that each member brings to the team. It also represents the unknown and undefined, acknowledging the intentional space for organic growth. Like lightbeams through a glass prism, we are diverse yet unified by our shared goals of uplifting and celebrating under-represented stories and talents.

OUR MISSION

PriXm strives to be inclusive, collaborative, and growth-oriented with all processes and products. Our team members represent marginalized and complex perspectives. The lived experiences of queer and racialized people are the foundation of our creative intentions and story telling. Our goals are to amplify and support emerging creatives by providing safe spaces, professional productions, and accessible industry-level opportunities. We are here to gate-break not gate-keep, so that we can be active changemakers in shaping creative industries for a more equitable and diverse future.

We strive to keep creating for-us-by-us initiatives, opportunities and spaces since the birth of PriXm. We’re a group of emerging artists in the 18-30 year old age range working and living in the creative arts space, also as first and second generation immigrants migrating away from the traditional STEM field careers, trying our best to create a better artistic and hopeful environment for ourselves and newer generations to come.

HOUSEWERK

Gotta have House! Music! All night long!🏠

🎵 ‘Housewerk’ Sessions is an Open Styles House Music Jam, a by-us-for-us initiative for Queer and Trans* BIPOC folx🏳️‍🌈

Kickstarted by Sebastian and currently spearheaded by Ky, our goal for this initiative is to create, curate, and cultivate a safe space for QTBIPOC folx to vibe and session to house music and be in community.

This initiative is created, curated, cultivated and catered to House dancers, W*ackers, Ballroom folks, street dancers of all ages. Those who may have financial barriers to street dance events or education are also able to attend Housewerk as our sessions are always free of charge. Those who are interested in occasional guided/facilitated workshops and screening events are also welcome as well.

Through our bi-monthly collaboration with The 519 since 2024, we have been creating a unique movement intersection connecting cultures through dance and queer connection.

House music and the dance form is also a style that was created by queer and BIPOC dancers, so we hope to honour its roots and preserve/learn about the rich history and legacy of our queer elders.

deep in vogue canada

Deep In Vogue Canada is a Ballroom focused initiative started and lead by Ky(Toronto Godfather Krackle Old Navy) and Sunshine(Toronto Princess Sunshine Old Navy) to cultivate and grow Pop Dip & Spin the Old Way/New Way Vogue in Canada.

The Pop Dip & Spin performance style was created and pioneered by Paris Dupree and later evolved, developed and spread throughout New York City, nationally then internationally by Black, Trans and Latinx queer folks including and most influentially by fem queens, drag queens and gay men through Ballroom culture.

We host free monthly community based sessions in street dance spaces on Wednesdays. We also host sessions in collaboration with the Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance and Maggies Toronto every last Tuesday of the month at Fort York(The Bentway). Donations from sessions directly support PDS/New Way categories at balls throughout Canada and also help partially fund workshops! We hope to honour its roots and preserve/learn more about the rich history and legacy of these important queer Ballroom Pioneers, Trailblazers, Icons and Legends.
